You can't know where you're going until you understand where you've been.

In 2020, I started working inside correctional facilities, learning about childhood trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences, sitting across from people who were doing something I had never quite managed to do for myself: looking honestly at where they came from and how it had shaped everything that followed.

Here's the thing about that. I genuinely thought I knew myself pretty well. I was a creative director, a storyteller, someone who had spent her whole career helping other people figure out who they were and what they were trying to say. (Turns out that's a very convenient way to avoid asking yourself the same questions.)

For most of my adult life I had been building things that looked right from the outside, careers and relationships and versions of myself shaped almost entirely by what other people needed from me, and I was genuinely good at it. What I wasn't doing was looking at the older, quieter stuff underneath: the experiences I had never examined, the beliefs I had built my whole life on without ever questioning where they came from, the choices I kept making from a place I couldn't have named if someone had asked me to. The depression I had masked so well I'd almost convinced myself it wasn't there. The way I had spent decades planting roots in other people and in identities that were never mine, until I looked up one day and couldn't tell you who was actually underneath all of it.

What those rooms taught me, and what I've been trying to understand more fully every year since, is that awareness is the first step to everything. You can't know where you're going until you understand where you've been, and most of us are so focused on moving forward that we never stop to actually look. We keep building. We keep going. And then something stops working and we can't figure out why, because what's driving us is something we've never once examined.

That's what all of this is about.
