It's easy to get lost in the darkness...
Thoughts are clouded, emotions run wild and lightning strikes from all directions. Claps of thunder simultaneously sound and you have no idea which direction to head because you cannot find the way home.
It's noisy, dark and you cannot see what's right in front of you... but maybe you're not supposed to. Maybe this is a test.
Not just of strength but a test that forces you to rely on your inner compass. You have nothing else - your senses are blurred and you’re standing there naked quivering in the cold, raw and vulnerable in the eye of the storm.
Your inner compass is a guiding force that you cannot see, touch, smell or hear, but you can feel it. It's always there, sometimes hidden under thousands of intricate, messy, knotted-together layers but it's there.
Finding it - feeling it - through the chaos can seem like an impossible feat. But no matter what you think is happening, it is there. Trust it.
Listen, shh...
Focus.
Breathe.
Feel your breath, it will remind you that you are okay.
One layer at a time you get closer, and the closer you get the quieter the storm becomes. Like a game of hot and cold the storm suppresses as you clear through layers of confusion, worry and fear. The skies begin to clear and you can catch a glimpse of light through the clouds.
Then the light fades, the winds pick up and before you know it you're lost again. You have no idea where the winds have swept you this time and you are motionless. Fear sets in. A weight like no other descends into you and you sink further down into the mud. You're stuck. Surrendering to the storm seems the only option since you cannot see a damn thing and are exhausted from fighting your way through it.
But, you don't, because something is keeping you from doing so, something stronger than the storm. You don't know why but as the wind whips your hair, the rain pelts your face and the thunder deafens you, you are somehow okay.
You are okay. You find comfort in that, a calmness, and as you do the rain begins to stop, the winds take ease and the clouds fade away, slowly revealing the way home. You breathe as if it's for the first time. You're not lost anymore.
